Does Your Chevy Need a Radiator Repair?

Your car radiator stops your engine from overheating as it runs. Your Chevy dealer will check it out and make sure it’s running efficiently every time you stop by for preventative maintenance, but problems can occur between visits. You need to look out for the signs that something is wrong and get a radiator repair as soon as you notice any of the signs below.

Your Car Overheats

Keep an eye on the temperature gauge during every trip. If it’s steadily climbing, then you need to pull over and shut off the engine ASAP and wait for the car to cool down before driving again. You should also take note of how the gauge looks on the average ride and take note if your car has been running hotter than usual for the last few journeys. That can indicate a problem with the radiator, too.

If you don’t notice your temperature gauge climbing, then the engine will get too hot and smoke will pour out from under the hood. If this happens, you need to pull over and get towed to a dealer to avoid damaging the engine.

2. Your Coolant Is Discolored

Check on the fluids in your vehicle every so often to make sure they haven’t become gritty or discolored. Coolant is slightly translucent and very bright in color, usually coming in shades such as pink, green, or orange. If it has become dark and is no longer translucent, then you’ll need to go and get that coolant replaced.

3. Your Coolant Is Leaking Out

If you notice a puddle of what looks like coolant underneath or beside your vehicle, take a look at the coolant in the tank and see if it’s the same color as the pool on the ground. If it is, then you definitely have a coolant leak, and you’ll have to get to the dealer ASAP. Don’t attempt to drive if you don’t have much coolant left in your car. Top off your coolant level if you have the right coolant on hand, but if you don’t, then you’ll need to call a tow truck.

4. Your Radiator Is Rusty

Look for spots of rust and discoloration on the metal parts of your radiator. If you spot them, then it may be a sign there’s coolant leaking out, getting onto these metal components, and quickly evaporating away. Even if your radiator rust isn’t caused by a coolant leak, the rust can corrode parts of the radiator and lead to a leak in the future.

Come to Heartland Chevrolet to get your radiator fixed if you’re having any of the problems above. We’ll make sure it’s running perfectly, so you can head back out on the road again as soon as possible.
