3 Favorite Camping Spots Worth Driving To From Kansas City, MO

There are lots of great places to camp near Kansas City, MO, and if you’re willing to drive a bit there are so many you’ll be spoilt for choice! Whether you prefer getting close to nature by camping in a tent, or like the comforts of an RV, you’ll be sure to find your new favorite spot for a weekend’s hideaway on this list.

1. Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area

Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area offers a fantastic glimpse at Missouri’s amazing natural beauty. The total area of the site is 2,7001 acres which is plenty of space to spend a day wandering along the miles of trails that criss-cross the area. The trails can be used by hikers, cyclists, or horseback riders, so if you fall into the latter two categories, do keep an eye out for people using the trail on foot.

Hunting and fishing are also allowed, and there’s even a shooting range where you can practice your aim before heading out. If you’re camping in the area you’ll need a permit first which is available through the Southwest Regional Office. The campground is primitive and off-grid, with no water hookups or other facilities, but it’s one of the best places to get into nature. Just be careful of the water level, otherwise, you could end up very wet if it rains!

2. Mark Twain National Forest – Swan Creek

Swan Creek is a huge area within the national forest that allows visitors to camp at dispersed sites throughout the area. It’s designated as a “Semi-Primitive Nonmotorized Area” which means that unfortunately, it’s not possible to camp here with an RV. However, the creek itself is a great spot for fishing and swimming, as well as providing a regular supply of water, albeit non-potable.

The area is also a great spot for hiking, with over 20 miles of trail to explore, and further connections to the rest of the national forest. The trails are only moderately used, and the area is usually big enough that you’ll have them to yourself, except during busty periods in the summer.

3. Cape Fair

If you’re willing to travel a little further afield, then head to Cape Fair Campground, situated along the James River Arm of Table Rock Lake. It’s a paradise for nature lovers, and with its location close to the water, makes for a great fishing spot as well. It’s also popular with boaters, and you can even hire boats or resupply from the marina, which has everything you’ll need to get out on the water.

There are 45 reservable campsites available, not to mention the large picnic shelter that can be booked by groups.  The campsite has all the modern amenities you could wish for, including hot showers, drinking water, and a dump station.
