4 Interesting Museums in Kansas City

As the largest city in Missouri, Kansas City is home to many museums, guaranteeing there is something for just about anyone. If you’re interested in music, history, sports, or art, the city has you covered. Keep reading to learn more about the four museums you must visit the next time you’re in the area. 

1. American Jazz Museum 

This highly interactive museum, found in the historic 18th and Vine district, chronicles the history of American jazz and its most popular contributors, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. Look at the sheet music and posters located throughout the museum and test your music memory at some of the many listening stations. The museum also hosts many special events throughout the year, including up-and-coming bands and nationally recognized jazz artists.  

2. National World War I Museum and Memorial 

Located in downtown Kansas City, the National World War I Museum and Memorial was designated by Congress as the country’s official World War I museum. It holds the most diverse collection of objects associated with the war and includes permanent exhibits that explain hundreds of artifacts. The Library Memorial Tower displays objects collected beginning on Armistice Day, which was Nov. 11, 1918. A glass bridge overlooks 9,000 poppies, with each one representing 1,000 soldier deaths. 

3. Natural Museum of Toys and Miniatures 

People of all ages will enjoy the Natural Museum of Toys and Miniatures, which is located on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Take a walk back to your childhood as you check out more than 70,000 items housed in the museum. First-floor exhibits feature miniature models, including a tiny piano and living room set. Head into the toy section and admire the beautiful dollhouses, some of which are taller than adults. Some of the toys featured date back to the 1950s and include G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, and the Easy-Bake Oven.  

5. Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art 

As one of the country’s premier art museums, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art features works from across the globe, spanning several centuries. Although some of the exhibits charge an admissions fee, entrance to the museum is free. Among the artwork to view includes Monet’s original Water Lilies painting, a giant Buddha statue, and Native American pottery. Afterward, head outside and walk through the 17-acre Sculpture Park, which includes bronze sculptures created by British designer Henry Moore. You can also visit the enormous shuttlecocks that decorate the front lawn. 

Kansas City has incredible museums located throughout the city.
